The American roulette wheel and table layout
The American roulette wheel is slightly different from the 37-slot wheel that is used for the French and the European roulette variants. The wheel used in US roulette has a total of 38 slots, including 36 red and black slots that accommodate numbers from 1 to 36, and two green slots that accommodate the “0” (zero) and the “00” (double zero).
The additional zero in the American roulette variant is what sets it apart from the European and French roulette games. This additional double-zero in the American version increases the number of slots to 38, and is also the reason for its higher house edge of 2/38 or 5.26%.
Unlike in the European roulette wheel, where the numbers are randomly arranged, the numbers in the American roulette wheel are more organized. The numbers on the American roulette wheel are placed against each other as pairs such that 0 is placed opposite 00, 1 is placed opposite 2, 3 is placed opposite 4 and so on. The arrangement of the numbers on the American wheel is considered to be more practical when compared to the arrangement on the European wheel.
The American roulette table also has the additional double zero, which is what makes it different from the European table. The American roulette table also has three columns, with both the “zero” and the “double-zero” slots on the top. Next to the columns are the dozen bets, the even and odd bets, the high -low (1-18 and 19-36) bets and the red-black bets.

The payouts for these three betting options remains at 1:1 even in American roulette. However, the odds of your winning these bets are 47.37% in the American version, which is lesser when compared to the odds of 48.6% in the European version.
The five-number bet – Besides the above bets, which are also present in European roulette, the five-number bet is an additional bet that can be placed when you play American roulette online. In this option, you place your bet only on the five numbers – 00,0,1,2 and 3. The payout for this bet is 6:1, and the odds of your winning this bet are 13.16%.
